We spoke with Alexander Zahariev, Head of Strategy at SUNOTEC.
SUNOTEC is a Strategic Partner of the Battery Storage Europe Platform, offering expertly integrated solar and storage solutions globally. As one of the leading companies driving utility-scale BESS deployment in Southeast Europe, and the largest developer and operator of BESS in Bulgaria, SUNOTEC brings unique perspectives from both development and long-term operation.
Why is battery storage important to SUNOTEC?
Battery storage is fundamental to SUNOTEC because it represents the next decisive step in the evolution of renewable energy. For more than a decade, we have built large-scale solar PV projects across Europe. But the future of solar is no longer just about generating clean electricity. It’s about delivering flexible, reliable, dispatchable power. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) allow us to turn intermittent generation into predictable energy systems, stabilising the grid, reducing curtailment, and unlocking new revenue streams for our partners and investors. As an integrated solutions provider, adding BESS to our portfolio was a natural extension of our value chain. It strengthens our ability to design, build, operate and invest in full hybrid systems and reinforces our long-term ambition to deliver infrastructure that remains competitive for decades. Storage is a strategic pillar for SUNOTEC and it is quickly becoming one of the most important parts of our business.
SUNOTEC is a Strategic Partner of the Battery Storage Europe Platform — why did you choose to join?
We chose to join the Battery Storage Europe Platform because collaboration is essential if Europe is to scale storage fast enough to meet its energy transition goals. As the largest developer and operator of BESS in Bulgaria, SUNOTEC brings unique perspectives from both development and long-term operation.
Joining the platform allows us to:
- Contribute practical expertise from real hybrid and standalone storage projects,
- Support the creation of better regulatory and market frameworks,
- Accelerate the integration of BESS into European energy systems, and
- Shape a market that reflects the needs of developers, investors, and operators alike.
For us, joining is part of our responsibility as a company that builds critical infrastructure: to help shape the environment in which that infrastructure must operate.
Why do we need more battery storage in Europe?
Europe needs more battery storage because the energy system it is building is fundamentally different from the one it is replacing. As renewables become the backbone of electricity generation, the system requires more flexibility than traditional infrastructure can provide. Battery storage delivers that flexibility instantly, efficiently, and at scale. It balances the intermittency of solar, stabilises the grid, and ensures that clean power is available exactly when it’s needed. Without accelerated storage deployment, Europe will struggle to integrate new renewable capacity and fully realise the benefits of its energy transition.
