Scaling battery storage across Europe is vital to building a modern, reliable, and fully decarbonised power system

We spoke to Richard Koenig, CEO, Co-Shareholder and Founder of Enery.

Enery is a Strategic Partner of the Battery Storage Europe Platform, leading the green energy transition through the acquisition, development, construction, and operation of large-scale renewable energy plants and storage assets.

Why is battery storage important to Enery?

At Enery, we are committed to continuously strengthening and diversifying our portfolio in order to deliver reliable, cost-efficient and future-proof energy solutions. As renewable generation grows rapidly across our markets, so does the need for flexibility — and battery storage play a central role in meeting this challenge. It is no longer an optional add-on to renewable assets, but an essential part of how modern energy systems operate.

We are actively investing in a mix of standalone battery storage systems as well as co-located solutions paired with our operational and development-stage solar and wind parks. These assets allow us to respond more dynamically to market signals, reduce curtailment of renewables, and improve the overall efficiency of our portfolio. In addition to our own pipeline, we are collaborating with large-scale developers and integrating third party-owned batteries into the asset base managed by our energy trading team.

By combining in-house development, operational expertise, and strategic partnerships, we aim to deliver additional stability, flexibility, and value across the entire energy system. Ultimately, battery storage supports our long-term mission to accelerate the energy transition in Central and Eastern Europe while empowering customers with cleaner, smarter, and more dependable energy services.

Enery is a Strategic Partner of the Battery Storage Europe Platform — why did you choose to join?

We chose to join the Battery Storage Europe Platform because we see collaboration as a cornerstone of scaling storage technologies across Europe. No single company can address the regulatory, technical, and market challenges alone — progress requires a united effort from policymakers, grid operators, financial institutions, developers, and technology providers.

As a Strategic Partner, Enery has the opportunity to contribute insights from the fast-evolving Central and Eastern European markets, where storage adoption is accelerating but still faces uneven regulatory frameworks and grid limitations.

At the same time, we gain access to a broad network of experts and peers across Europe, allowing us to exchange knowledge on market design, business models, and cutting-edge technologies. This collaboration helps ensure that energy storage becomes fully integrated into energy systems in a cost-efficient, market-oriented, and future-proof way. Joining this initiative aligns with our commitment to be an active, responsible contributor to Europe’s clean energy transition, not just a participant, but a driver of positive change.

Why do we need more battery storage in Europe?

Europe’s energy transition is entering a critical phase. The rapid expansion of wind and solar capacity requires equally rapid growth in flexible resources to balance supply and demand in real time. Battery storage is uniquely positioned to provide this flexibility: it is fast-acting, emissions-free, highly scalable, and capable of responding within milliseconds to fluctuations on the grid.

More battery storage will enable Europe to absorb higher volumes of renewable energy, reducing curtailment and making better use of clean power that would otherwise be wasted. It will also reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based balancing resources, helping lower system costs and accelerate decarbonisation. As electricity markets become more volatile, batteries strengthen energy security by providing reserve capacity, supporting frequency control, and ensuring reliable operation during unexpected grid disturbances or extreme weather events.

Beyond grid stability, storage supports the creation of new value streams and business models, enables more efficient use of existing grid infrastructure, and enhances the resilience of communities and industries.

In summary, scaling battery storage across Europe is vital to building a modern, reliable, and fully decarbonised power system — one capable of supporting the continent’s climate goals, economic competitiveness, and long-term energy independence.
