10X Battery Storage: IPS Battery Storage Manufacturing Facility in Bulgaria Sets an Example for Europe

Europe needs to scale its battery storage capacity tenfold by 2030 to meet the EU’s energy transition goals, enhancing competitiveness and reducing dependency on fossil fuel imports as a matter of security.

As part of the Battery Storage Europe Platform’s #10XBatteryStorage campaign, we are visiting the companies leading the charge on Europe’s battery storage journey.

During a visit to Sofia, Bulgaria, the Battery Storage Europe Platform explored IPS’s battery storage manufacturing facility, a gigawatt scale site demonstrating how  Europe can accelerate domestic production to meet its growing flexibility needs. SolarPower Europe’s CEO Walburga Hemetsberger met with IPS CEO Alexander Rangelov and COO Mariyana Yaneva to learn more about how the company is leading the charge for Europe’s energy transition.

On site, CEO, Alexander Rangelov detailed their rapid scaleup strategy and outlined how IPS currently operates with 3 GWh of annual production capacity and is already constructing a second facility. The expansion is set to reach 5 GWh by the first quarter of next year and 15 GWh by 2027. This rapid growth reflects the urgency of strengthening Europe’s industrial capabilities and lessening dependence on imported technologies.

COO, Mariyana Yaneva guided visitors through the production line, emphasising the role of local production in safeguarding Europe’s energy security while creating high skilled jobs essential for a sustainable cleantech sector.

The significance of the IPS gigafactory extends beyond industrial innovation. Recognised by the European Commission as a strategic project under the NetZero Industry Act, the facility reflects Europe’s commitment to rebuilding competitive manufacturing in critical technologies. SolarPower Europe’s CEO Walburga Hemetsberger, underlined how both deployment and manufacturing support are necessary to achieve Europe’s storage ambitions and to ensure that a meaningful share of this capacity is produced locally.

The visit underscored a shared vision among industry leaders and policymakers: Europe needs to accelerate both storage deployment and local production to secure a competitive, clean, and independent energy future. IPS’s expanding manufacturing footprint shows the key role European companies can play in delivering that transformation.

Let’s supercharge the energy transition.
