This month marks one year since the launch of the Battery Storage Europe Platform, an initiative by SolarPower Europe bringing together industry leaders representing the battery storage value chain to advance the business case and regulatory frameworks for battery storage across the EU.
Over the past year, we have been working alongside our member to advocate for a tenfold increase in battery storage by 2030 to ensure Europe’s energy transition, security, and competitiveness.
On 1 July, exactly one year since the launch of the Platform, we hosted an in-person strategy at SolarPower Europe offices, bringing together a wide range of industry representatives, as well as the Paula Rey Garcia, Deputy Head of Unit at DG ENER (European Commission), ACER, and ENTSO-E.
Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO SolarPower Europe, set the vision for the day’s discussions:
“Battery storage is not just a nice to have, it is very much essential for the energy transition. And it is important that we write this chapter together. We have a 200 GW target for energy storage under AccelerateEU. We need to make sure that it is put into practice. We have also signed the first-of-its-kind Tripartite agreement for energy storage along with 22 Member States, a very clear and strong political statement that storage is central to the energy transition. Now let’s build on this.”
Discussions throughout the day focused on how we go from ambition to action, making sure we achieve the new target set by the European Commission.
Sonja Risteska, Head of the Battery Storage Europe Platform rounded up the discussions, stating:
“Battery storage has really skyrocketed in the EU in the past few years. There is still a lot of work ahead of us. The good thing is that there is a target. This of course will require full ambition from all players. We are calling for a Battery Storage Action Plan to make sure we have very concrete action points for the next steps, to measure progress, and see implementation on the ground.”
Thank you to all the Battery Storage Europe Platform members who joined us, and for your continued support throughout the past year. Together, we will keep driving the charge to #10XBatteryStorage in Europe.
