The Battery Storage Europe Platform, an initiative by SolarPower Europe, has elected a new Chair and two Vice Chairs to guide its mission at a pivotal moment for Europe’s energy transition. The Platform brings together industry leaders representing the battery storage value chain to advance the business case and regulatory frameworks for battery storage across the EU, with a shared vision: to increase battery storage capacity tenfold across Europe by 2030. This ambitious goal is central to supporting the integration of renewables, strengthening the grid, and enhancing Europe’s energy security and competitiveness on the global stage.
The newly elected Chair, Guido Boccardo, Head of Public and Regulatory Affairs at Statkraft, brings a wealth of experience in energy innovation:
“I am honoured by the trust placed in me to Chair the Platform. Now more than ever, battery storage is a cornerstone of Europe’s energy transition, enabling system flexibility and renewables integration, while contributing to energy security and affordable prices. My priority is simple: to turn our shared expertise into concrete action, proactively contributing to EU policymaking and accelerating the deployment of storage solutions across Europe. I look forward to working closely with Platform members to deliver tangible progress together.”
Supporting the Chair are the two Vice Chairs, Lars Stephan, Director Marketing, Policy and Public Affairs at Fluence and Christian Barba Rodulfo, Energy Storage Europe Senior Director at EDP. Both Vice Chairs have demonstrated strong leadership in advancing battery storage technologies and market readiness.
Lars Stephan commented: “Battery Storage is a key technology for our energy network to ensure affordable, reliable and renewable power for consumers and the European economy. The BSEP mission to grow the European battery fleet by 10 is an exciting and urgent mission. I’m proud to be able to support this mission as Vice-Chair of the BSEP platform.”
Christian Barba Rodulfo added: “The full harnessing of Europe’s renewable potential to ensure energy security, reliability, and affordability depends on a well-coordinated and forward-looking energy storage strategy. I’m looking forward to joining an extremely dynamic and complementary team to help channel the storage industry experience and views to our institutions.”
The new leadership team will focus on putting battery storage at the heart of the EU energy agenda by developing strategies to strengthen the business case, streamline regulatory frameworks, and foster cross-sector partnerships.
As Europe experiences another energy crisis caused by fossil fuel dependencies, the shift to renewables and battery storage is more important than ever. The Battery Storage Europe Platform, under its new leadership, stands ready to work hand-in-hand with the BESS industry, the solar sector, and policymakers to deliver a resilient, secure, and affordable energy system in Europe.
